This tool calculates sonic velocity of a gas in a pipe.
Gas Sonic Velocity calculator calculates the sonic velocity of a specified gas flowing in a pipe. The sonic velocity or the speed of sound is affected by the gas in a pipe depending on the physical properties of it. This is mainly the sound velocity of the internal substance in a pipe. The velocity gives you a clear indication about process and pipe material design for process and chemical engineers. They will find it useful for quick check calculations. It uses a database of 51 well known gases and their specific heat ratios along with their molecular weights for quick reference. These include air, ammonia, many inert gases, and common gases used in pipeline flow. Only inputs required for calculating the sonic velocity is the temperature.
The temperature input can be in degrees Celsius, Fahrenheit, Rankine or Kelvin. It is possible to choose "Other" from the selection box and enter your own specific heats ratio. Another alternative is to enter the Specific heat ratio at constant volume and Specific heat ratio at constant pressure. The calculated velocity value can be displayed in units of your choice. These could be meters per seconds (m/s), feet per second (ft/s), inches per second (inch/s), kilometer per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mile/h). Versions of the calculator are available for smartphones of iOS as well as Android operating systems. Windows desktop version is available free. This is a good and handy tool.
